I do not know if you would call them "in the mafia", but women are used, usually as prostitutes, or to attract men into a "mafia sting". You won't find them in roles of being strongarms, enforcing "roof" (payment for protection), etc.
I think some of the posts are confusing the "mafia" with the KGB, where women take a very active role.

There are women in Russian mafia. Unfortunately, the roles they play are not always great ones. More often than not they are simply used to achieve some goal.
