For the past 3 days, I've had back spasms. The first time was at night and they lasted for over an hour. Then I got them the next day for about 20 mins and today, i got them again for about 20 mins. The pain is excrutiating and is situated just under the left rib. The spasms feel like someone is stabbing me repeatedly. It feels like cramp but much worse. Any one have any idea what it could be?

Sometimes gastrointestinal issues feel like back pain especially in the area that you described. The symptoms you described are also indicative of an abdominal issue. You could possibly be having gall bladder attacks, appendicitis, kidney stones... the list can go on and on or it could really be back spasms. I think that you should go to the doctor as soon as you can and let him or her know what's going on. In the meantime - drink extra water and cranberry juice and try to eat milder foods - it might help and it certainly won't hurt.

Back spasms can be caused by a number of things. If you do not get enough water and potassium in your diet can cause muscle spasms. Those of you who drink pop are at risk as well. Now, what can also happen is to have a joint moving abnormally which can cause a muscle to react by going in to spasms. This is what you can see with torticollis (sp). With the ribs, it depends on where it is at that might be causing the spasms. (front, side and back all have different causes) If you go to your doctor, they will most likely prescribe a muscle relaxant and pain killer, which in all honesty, do not work. You will be doped up and not able to operate machinery. You need to find the cause of the problem and get help. Seek a person who works with muscles or the nervous system. Chiropractors have good luck with these things and it is alot safer and much more effective then the pills you get at your MD's office.

Wow. You really need to go to the doctor.
And I know everyone else is gonna say the exact same thing.

It's enough that these back spasms last a long time.
But it's PAINFUL too.

Get this checked out by your doctor. It could be something serious.
