there are some viruses like boot viruses which can corrupt ur operating system while still others which can destroy the partition table of ur hardisk thus rendering it unusable. though sometimes u are able to recover ur harddisk by low level formatting but in most of the cases the harddisk gets curropted beyond repair. but u needn't be afraid of such viruses as these type of viruses are rarely distributed openly. most of the viruses u get are trojens or some silly joke viruses that just eats into ur harddisk space thus occupying more and more space on ur harddisk

The worst a virus can do is erase the flash bios on your PC your screwed but if you go in your PCs settings and enable flash bios protection that will prevent any virus from attacking it but if you want to flash your bios with new firmware you have to go in settings and disable it.

There are viruses that can wipe out your hard drive so that it has to be low-level formatted all over again. Now, those are far and few between, but there are some active ones that can totally corrupt your data or steal your information.
