Check out autistic subculture.

The fascinating part of this, and what should make it more accessible to you, is that most of autistic subculture exists on the Internet. With face-to-face communication difficult, we find it much more easy to communicate in writing via message boards.

The majority of these autistics are high-functioning; but there is quite a showing of nonverbal autistics who communicate only by writing.

Here's one site, from which you should be able to follow links to quite a few others:

One warning: Don't pity these people or look down on them. The older ones just ignore it and make you feel awkward. The younger ones might even flame you; they've had to take enough of it in school already.

That is a very broad question. What do you want to know? If you need one subculture to focus on, I would consider the deaf or blind. There are special schools, sign language for the deaf; audio and braille to assist the blind, and so communication methods are different than for the average person. I do not like to say "normal" 'cause what is "normal" anyway? We are so diverse!

Check the recent news about the school for the deaf protesting and getting rid of their college president! That was on network news just yesterday, so you should be able to find something on it.... why they did it.... the feelings.... and how the protests were held.

Good Luck!
