I needed assistance in removing a video file from my Motorola V557 cell phone and the Cingular technician told me I would have to unlock my phone to delete the file. He is sending me a code but I want to know if this is something I should do?

Unlocking your cell phone only really has one advantage..> It allows you to use it on other carriers.. That is pretty much it.. If you travel internationally and want to use a different sim card while you're abroad, or want to keep your phone on another carrier, it's worth it, if you're staying with your current carrier and don't leave the country ever, don't bother..

Clarification on previous answer. You don't have to unlock the phone if you roam abroad provided you keep the original SIM card.

Basically you need to unlock if you want to use any other carrier's SIM card.
