No, you don't need an additional phone line. You can use the phone while using the internet, but you'll need to put a line filter on every telephone jack in use to filter out the DSL signal from the phone line.

I am sitting here in the Third World part of rural Mexico, using my DSL, and there is only one phone line. I am really enjoying DSL. We have some wild orchids in our trees, and I was able to identify them via DSL. (Laelia anceps and laelia anceps alba).

Also, a cousin showed me a flower that looked like a starfish with five points, and asked what kind of cactus it was. Turns out it isn't a cactus, but a plant from South Africa. A neighbor woman found a small piece of what she thought was a cactus in the street, and planted it. Turns out it's either stapelia grandiflora or stapelia gigantea, I sure can't tell them apart. There was extreme surprise when I showed them it was a South African plant.

Anyway, DSL is really neat, and the part I like best is we can chat on the phone at the same time.

No, if DSL is available in your area, your existing phone line can support DSL broadband data and voice data simultaneously. This means that over a single phone line, you can have bi-directional data flow via DSL and voice, so you can surf the net AND talk on the phone on a single phone line.

Hope this helps!

you could use your phone while on the internet. but you need filters for each phone you have installed.

(the filters are easy to install, just plug it in the phone jack, then plug in the phone line into the filter)
