Republicans are conservative, so they believe government should be as small as possible and very limited in power so the individual is responsible for his/her actions. Democrats are liberal, so they believe in greater civil liberties and using the power of the government for social reform.
Here's a basic rundown of where the two parties stand on the issues. Remember, this is a generalization, so not ALL Republicans and Democrats are like this:
-- Republicans are pro-life, Democrats are pro-choice
-- Democrats believe in animal rights, Republicans don't
-- Republicans will support a war if they believe the cause is just, Democrats as a rule oppose war
-- Democrats support gay marriage, Republicans don't
-- Republicans believe in capitalism and each person amassing wealth according to his/her efforts and risks, Democrats believe in much higher taxes for the rich and the redistribution of wealth
-- Democrats believe in global warming and support environmental causes, Republicans are skeptical about environmentalism
-- Republicans support helping the unemployed by teaching them job skills so they can find work and support themselves, Democrats support a welfare system where the unemployed are given money to support themselves
-- Democrats support socialized medicine (Federal health care system), Republicans believe such a system would cause more problems than it would solve
-- Republicans regard the Bible as the standard of right and wrong in our society (although many Republicans are not very good at obeying it), Democrats believe each person has the right to determine what is right and what is wrong for themselves
Does that help?

Firstly and most importantly we are AMERICANS -
although not acting much like it lately -
the one-sided control these days is tearing at the very fabric of the nation -
the republicans are good at winning elections and crappy at running things -
the reverse is true for the dems -
...divided we fall... *sigh*

oversimplified answer:
republicans are for economic freedom, but social regulation.
democrats are for economic regulation, but social freedom.
libertarians are for complete freedom, period.
