I have woked for 5 years as a CNA. I would not let a patient go over 3 days with out having a bm. I would try to see if apricot juice would be less harsh on the babys system then prune juice. Ask your doctor if giving the baby fiber would help. But if he is not to worried about it, it may be alright for the baby to go that long with out having a bm. I don't really know that much about the bowl movements of premature babies. Just old people.

a baby can go for days with out having a poopy diaper. Ask yourself is she straining to go to the bathroom, (is her face turning red and does she grunt) is her belly bigger than normal. is she throwing up, is there any blood in the stool when she does poop. is she a happy baby or one that cries all the time. Do not give a baby prune juice! if anything try pear juice. Pear juice works better for the little ones. Always check with doc first. If your still concerned get a second opinion

Babies who are not breastfed are often constipated. It is very hard for their immature digestive systems to assimilate the artificial ingredients in formula.
It is unfortunate that your friend did not chose to breastfeed her baby. She would not be having these problems. The fact that she was premature made it even more important that she receive breast milk.
If I were your friend I would contact the La Leche League and take their advice about how to relactate and start feeding her baby naturally.
If she is not willing to do that she will have to deal with the side effects of formula. The glycerin suppository is a good, fairly natural way to help her have a bowel movement. Your friend should be in touch with her pediatrician and follow her advice.
Good luck

The soy formula is known to cause constipation. I have also heard that the iron in the baby formulas can cause constipation, as well. What I do for my son if he hasn't had a bowel movement in a day is when I make up his formula I make it a little weaker. I do this just for one bottle and I only take away maybe half a scope. This sometimes works for me. I don't know about haveing a preemie, so you might want to talk to your doctor first, but I don't think if you did this with just one bottle that it would make much of a difference.

I don't have a remedy, but may I suggest your friend stops giving the baby prune juice. That is definitely not a good idea. The baby's stomach is not ready to digest anything but milk or formula at this age.

Prune juice for a 2 month old? Her little system is too underdeveloped to handle juice and it will only make her tummy more upset. Always check with your pediatrician before introducing anything other than formula or breastmilk before the 6th month.

if the little girl is on formula and is having this bowel problem... make sure that (obviously) the child isn't of a formula with iron in it. Iron is something that is really good for your blood... but bad for your bowels. My son did the same thing.... adding a little dark karo syrup to her bottle will help, as well as bicycling her legs. I know the Karo Syrup thing isn't suggested, but it's a home remedy that actually works.

My baby has problems with constipations, too but I've never waited 7 days for him to poop. Our doctor told us to stimulate him with the thermometer if his tummy gets hard. Since he is older, now we give him prunes and bananas, which seems to help. When he was smaller we gave him pears.
But if her tummy is hard, she shouldn't wait, she should take her baby in asap! And my baby was a preemie, too, that has nothing to do with it. It's not 'normal' for a baby to go seven days at a time without pooping. And she may have another digestive problem, so if I were your friend, I would take my baby to a doctor who gave my baby the attention she deserves.

My son had a hard time doing number 2. When he was about 3months we were told by our physician to add 1 tablespoon of Kayro ( i think that is how to spell it) syrup tp his bottle. The syrup is found at any grocery store, it should be where the other syrups are. There is dark and a clear one. Use the clear.
