Some of the cheapest places to live are: (1) Minot, North Dakota, (2) Billings, Montana (3) Mountain Home, Idaho, (4) Duluth, Minnesota, (5) Houghton, Michigan, not necessarily in that order. Bear in mind, however, the houses are cheap but in many cases the wages are low and jobs that pay well in other parts of the country may not pay as well there. You may want to try a good-sized city that isn't a major city like Austin, Texas or Dayton, Ohio.

Cheap is not always best. I know some people who went were it was cheap and being college grads they did not fit in with the rest of the people around them. They were miserable and sold the house at a lost to get back to civilization.

So don't worry about that, within reason of course. Look around the country at the places that your type of jobs are and see which one you like best.

Also the price of houses and the pay rates are linked. So in places where it cost a lot to live you also make more. One balances out the other.

By the way, Michigan is fine!! The auto industry is in a mess, many people have left the state and houses are cheap. People here are giving cars away with the houses. you can get a very good deal and when the economy comes back in a year or two, the house will be worth more. Come see us!!

Michigan, isn't cheap.. you can buy a house, but you never own the land.. property taxes are very high.. and you need a permit 2 do anything with the land.. except flowers, trees and shrubs.. houses are expensive 2 buy.. west virginia, is the land of freedom 2 do whatever you like.. even bury people, on your land without a permit.. and the property tax is about 80 dollars a year for 5 acres.. michigan property tax on 2 acres, is about 1800 a year. and the more you add 2 the 2 acres, like a swimming pool, shed or garage..takes the taxes higher.. your house insurance goes up if you have a trampoline on your property.. bummer eh.. so yes do a search and keep asking .. never know where you might find the perfect place : ) my niece, just let her house go in north carolina, because she couldn't sell it and she wanted 2 move back 2 w.v.. she had a nice house 2 with a 10 year investment in it.. 3 bedrooms, 1 bath.. mostly brick. nice big open yard.. you can also check on the comp 4 houses.. realtor.com maybe.. lota of luck on where ever you go : )
