iPods are the digital media players made by Apple, which work exclusively with iTunes, the digital media organizing program/media store owned by Apple. iTunes can play MP3 files and convert CD's to MP3's to upload to iPods, but songs and videos purchased from the iTunes store cannot work with other digital players.

You can have an iPod and iTunes and work strictly with MP3's--just don't purchase your music from the iTunes music store, and make sure that you have your iTunes preferences set to rip your CD's to MP3 rather than AAC. You can, of course, add your existing MP3's to your iTunes/iPod.

"MP3 Player" is a misnomer, as most digital players play more than just MP3's.

It really depends on the importance you place on appearances. People mostly get Ipods because their friend has one and they do not look any further. Apple computer co actually counts on this and can therefore afford to have excessive prices on their devices. It's a social thing. It also works with regular mp3's. But they make it much easier to use their proprietary music store online: Itunes.

There are many mp3 players aout there with double the capacity, as good quality and for nearly half the price.

Have a look at the Creative Labs's Zen player for example.
