First, always use a eyeshadow base such as Urban Decay primer potion, or for drug store brands, L'oreal Decrease. This makes a smoothe even surface for the shadows. Then, use a wide flat eyeshadow brush to pat on the shadow, and a fluffy brush to blend it in. For the bottom, use a small angled brush to get a straight even line underneath. If you would like to see pictures of brushes go to maccosmetics.com they have photos and descriptions of each brush.

Its best to use an eyeshadow brush instead of the spongey applicators that come with your shadows. The brush gives you more control and the finished results look much better. I suggest that you go to a make-up counter like MAC and have them demonstrate the look that you're wanting. Good Luck!
