I had stayed in San Diego for 2 months earlier this year.
Unlike San Francisco which you can easily understand the map, San Diego is hard to follow by the map. I bought 2 maps before going there but it isnt complete. I bought a more complete one but it is too small to be read. Even those staying in San Diego x 20 years dont know the place verbatim.
I suggest that you take a trolley ride to be able to appreciate the whole of San Diego . There are buses in most trolley stations. However, be sure that you park your car well & in a secure place. There are many mountains, El Cajon, La Mesa, etc.
Drive by car to the last American exit. Go to the outlet store there in San Isidro.
Dont forget to see San Diego Zoo, Wild Animal Park & Sea World. I advise you to come early since there are scheduled shows. You can buy bottomless drinks which you can refill the whole day & serves as souvenir too.
Go to LEGOLAND! This is not only for children but adults also enjoy this place.
Coronado Bridge gives a spectacular view of the place. This bridge won a major award because of its structure. This is one of the tallest in the USA. Dont forget to see the Hotel del Coronado which is one of the best not only in the USA but also in the world. You will love the beaches over there.
Go to Harbor area, the Mariott Hotel has nice view of this area.

There are so many things to do and see in San Diego. Choose the things that sound best to you.

Torrey Pines State Preserve is a beautiful place to hike and enjoy coastal views. Kayaking the caves of La Jolla is a great experience. Cruise the bay. For romance, take a gondola ride. Explore the tidepools at the Cabrillo National Monument. Go wine tasting at wineries in Escondido, Julian, or Temecula. Take a carriage ride through Balboa Park. Watch the sunset into the ocean. Rent bikes, take the ferry to Coronado Island and bicycle around the island. Explore the museums and gardens of Balboa Park. Visit the Zoo or the Wild Animal Park.

The Zoo, without a doubt!

Point Loma Seafood for a great lunch. Fort Rosecrans and the lighthouse. Croce's downtown for an evening out.

Tijuana is lots of fun. Don't drive over, though. The wait to get back is WAY to long! Walk across and get a cab, they'll take you to the best shopping section.

Coronado and the Hotel Del Coronado. Be sure to go upstairs in the old elevator and sit in the giant chair.

Depending on your age, Pacific Beach is a lot of fun, and less stuffy than La Jolla.

Go down to the Tijuana River Valley and rent horses to ride on the beach. (United States side of the border).

There's a million things to do in San Diego!

You "must" go to the beach. La Jolla Shores is nice and has parking near by. This is a good time of year to go to the Wild Animal Park, in the summer it's so hot the animals just sleep all day. Go to Sea World, unless they already have one where you live.

San Diego is about having fun, so dont' feel like you have to "do" a lot of crazy things. Just pick a few and have fun doing them without stressing out!
