Downtown Chicago (the Loop) is surrounded by at least 6.25 miles of Chicago in all directions. The closest suburb is Cicero to the west...6.25 mi from State & Madison. A little farther, Oak Park to the west....7.5 miles. Another 1.5 mi gets you to Forest Park and River Forest, Berwyn.and Elmood Park to the west and Evanston to the north. All are established l50+ yr old cities. OP, Bwyn, FP, RF and Evanston have both Metra train and CTA el service to the loop. EP requires bus to train service. Riding time ...about 25 min for all. If you drive, expect to pay high rates for parking.

Another couple of miles gets you to several more suburbs, many with Metra. CTA extends NW to O'Hare and N to Wilmette and Skokie. All train stations have surface bus connections.

Chgo is extensively populated with people in many suburbs...40??? Buy a Rand McNally or Chgo. Tribune map of Chgo. for the best reference. Then connect to the following site for specific routes, fares, and times:

Huh? Chicago is huge, not just a downtown area and... nothing. Chicago stretches out far in each direction. There are no cities close to downtown Chicago. The only thing close to downtown Chicago is MORE Chicago. Evanston is probably the closest other city to Chicago, far north. There are other suburbs west, northwest, south and southwest of the city, but you'd have to take a train to get from them to downtown.
