During spells DO NOT burn black candles you will be inviting entities from the evil side... There are some riuals that use black candles and they are for good but I have long forgot them - don't use them till' you know their purpose it is danger, death, dark, endings, blindness, confusion and deception.
I no longer use black candles too many bad experiences....
I have attended and red cards at big meetings many time and I "never" saw anyone burn black and red candles while reading cards, I don't burn any at all it doesn't make you weaker or stranger and it can be dangerous. Many places don't even allow them to be burnt for fire hazardous purposes.

I would suggest Raymond Buckland's Practical Candleburning Rituals to you. There are rituals, and spells for every purpose. One spell included in the book that calls for a black candle is to uncross a person. Yes, you can burn them with other colors according to the spell. As far as I know, black candles within themselves hold no more psychic power than white, the difference is in the application. Remember "In it harm none, do what you wilt."

Black candles only got their reputation for being used only for the dark arts during the dark ages when peoples' fears seemed to come to life, jumping out of the darkness at them, so to speak. Add to this the witch movements that started around 1200 to 1300 a.c.e. (after common era, or ad) when poor, single women living alone could only afford cheap cloth to make their clothes, the cheapest cloths being dark browns, dark greens, dark blues, and black, all looking black in shadows or during the night (this is also where the superstition of black cats being a witch's familiar comes from, too, since most cats only like to hunt at night and most humans aren't able to distinguish more than just a dark shape at night). The candles were actually given the rumor of having magical properties by clerics and other religious leader-types as ways of becoming "closer to God".
But, to answer your question about their use during spells and when trying to See, alone they will only allow you to channel your abilities one way, but with other colors they will allow you, oddly enough, to be able to think more clearly during either process. (recommended: black and green or black, red, and white to cast; and black and white, coupled with the same elemental color as the subject to See).
But remember - they only have the powers that you give them.

Usually Tarot Card readers light black and red candles, while reading cards. Don't Play With White Magic. Demons prey on novices. It is dangerous.

" Candle Magic " is another source for further information. the information I received for burning certain colored candles for certain occasions was received from a Cherokee Shaman.
