It can mean a sign of peace as already mentioned, but if you twist your hand around it can mean "f**k off".

It's origins lie with the British hundreds of years ago. Apparently the British had invented a much stronger and more powerful weapon called the Longbow (The French were still using a Crossbow) and if the French in their many wars with Britain were to capture a British solider they would cut off his index finger (The one you point with) so he could not use a Longbow ever again.

So it kind of became a British thing to do to a Frenchman (If they had not been captured!) to show them they still got two fingers to use a Longbow to kill them with!

I've overheard this question before when my students was chatting. V means virgin. Example of conversation:

Boy 1: Do you think that girl over there is still a V?
Boy 2: Naaa.... look at the way she walk. Is so obvious.
Boy 1: Aaaa.... okay thanks.

* People, the asker is asking the meaning of V in the Malaysia context. Not the meaning of V as in Victory which is known commonly.

* Do you know that AV in the Malaysia context also have a different meaning? It means "Auntie Visit" ;-)

"V" stands for "victory" often used during WWII as a hand signal for "we shall obtain victory" or "we have obtained victory!" There is a famous photo of Winston Churchill, the leader of Britain during WWII "flashing the "V" sign. The "V sign" is made by forming a "V" with the first two fingers of the hand. Also the Morse Code spelling of "v" (dit dit dit dah) was used as a secret code used by the Allies to signal the invasion of Europe by allied forces.
Although not as popular today, the "V" sign is still used. One has to use caution though because a "V" sign shown with the back of the hand is considered an obscene gesture in some cultures!

Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin van-guarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition.
