Your mercedes 300SD is a 126 Chasis with 4 wheel disc brakes. Many will say It's not a "big-deal" to do the work your-self,and compare the task ,like other cars they have done. But, If you have no experience, its best to have a reputable shop do the repair. A proper "rear brake job" includes the following, disc replacement if below minimum thickness/maching disc if possible, clean emergency shoes;lube important areas, install new quality pads. The brake caliper needs to be serviced by carefully depressing caliper "pistons" into position to install the new "thick" pads. cleaning the caliper inner pad seat areas and appling specific lube is required. Safety and Reliability is why I recommend a "professional" do this work. Good luck!

They are disc brakes. Mercedes has had discs since they were invented I think. Anyway, I replaced mine (a W-140) a year or so back. They are just like the front discs only at the other end of the car :-)
BTW, your car is a W-126, a very reliable and durable MB

You have disc brakes for driving and also there is a parking drum brakes inside, so if you taking off rear rotors watch for those, if they worn it may create a resistance to pull the rotors off, turn them slowly while tapping with a plastic hammer and you should be fine. I had same car 1982 model, now I got 1994 3.5 diesel but brakes still same, good luck.

Yes, you can replace them and yes they are discs. Just the same as any regular disc brake replace, but when you bleed them, you're adding brake fluid in a SEPARATE reservoir in the engine compartment...but don't freak out. Just slowly pour the brake fluid in the "normal" reservoir and it will spill over into the "hidden" res for the rear brakes.
AT LEAST THAT'S HOW MY 560 SL IS!!!

i own a repair shop, and i wish you had said if it had rear disc on it or not because this changes the procedure on changing them if it does have rear disc the pistons on it turn in,so don't try and push them in,,you'll damage them if their drum brakes their just like any other car they just go, on and off fairly simple,if your doing it your self just watch how you take them apart, and do one side at a time this way you have something to go by in case you forget where something goes,,good luck with it,,i hope this will help.
