When you figure out the answer to that one, let me know ok? lol You're definitely not alone. Most people experience insomnia in one form or another.
Possible causes... Too much caffeine, hunger, physical illness or pain, mental stress, panic disorder, unresolved emotions (sometimes stuff we try not to stew about during the day comes back to plague us @ night, when we should be resting.)

sure you can this is what you do:
1. take a (very heavy) skillet
2. hold it with both hands in front you you
3. strike your head (as hard as you can) with the pan
4. fall fast asleep
in the morning take 2 advil to get rid of your head ache.

could be many reasons...ask yourself
are you eating after 7pm?
having caffinated drinks throughout the day such as coffee and soda?
are you stressed out?
planning too many things for one day and not accomplishing all of them?
not taking time out to meditate and clear your mind?
