i own a repair shop,and its not supposed to be ,the manual says its harmless,i don't know what it is really but i have to replace them in some cars after they have been in an accident ,and i was concerned about it also,and i did ask the maker of the air bags and they said it was just like bay powder in them,so going by that id say it don't hurt you,at lest i hope not,good luck i hope this help,s.

The "dust" is talcum powder (bath powder) used for lubrication, to allow the folded bag to unfold and expand freely.

There is no connection between the air in the bag and the air that you're breathing.

no,that "dust" is actually corn starch,put there to keep the bag from sticking to itself internally,totally harmless...it's food!...but I don't think you should eat it

yes in massive amounts like your exhause pipe, smelling your exhaust is not good for you but it won't hurt you if you aren't stupid as hell and not hang out at the exhaust pipe...
but not as bad for you as breathing through the hole in the windshield your head is in. or breathing through the broken nose and missing teeth caused by your head hitting the steering wheel...
