Good question. Perhaps birds, their main predator, are sleeping at that time making it more safe to forage for food or collect nectar and so forth. So then why don't all bugs just do that? Not a question that is easily answered. Perhaps other bugs are much better at escaping becoming lunch or reproduce more rapidly. I am not positive about that. Bugs, and sometimes a lot of animals, don't always do things that would seem logical to a human being. But the way the question is posed it does make it appear as though the moths are somehow contradicting themselves or doing this that don't seem totally logical.

During the day, the light is more or less spread out everywhere. So moths don't congregate in any one place. But at night, when the only lights are from your windows or other outside lights, they will gather.

Because during the day they keep trying to fly all the way to the sun. Then they get up too high and freeze, falling back to the earth. When they thaw out again, they start over.

They are nocturnal insects and are attracted to the heat and light that light bulbs give out, this is why we see them most often near our porch lights our othe well lit areas.
