If you want extreme examples. Think Communist Russia = left wing, and Hitler's Germany as = Right wing. I think that it is a little more complicated these days, because, the term left wing, tends to embrace not only the old style Communists, but also the modernising social engineers, the PC brigade, feminism, the race and equal opportunity police, the pro immigration and pro EU types etc. Also, the left, as represented by many in the teaching profession, including this government and the TV media, tend to accuse anyone who doesn't agree with their agenda as being right wing. This is because they have tried to present left wing politics as being the new centre ground. The 'left' like big controlling government, are anti-democratic and mistrust capitalism. They are idealogically driven and like to tell us how to run our lives in as much detail as possible. The 'right' (not extreme right) are patriotic, like small government, agree with capitalism and democracy, and like to give people as much freedom as possible within the law. They believe in the maintaining the culture and traditions of a country.
It would be possible to write at length on this subject, but the above gives a general idea.

It's the spectrum of political beliefs, at the extreme right you have fascism where the state controls all and in the extreme left you have communism where the public has all the control. Of course most political parties are more middling, usually just to the left (labour, ideally for the protection of the working class) or just to the right. (conservative, for maintaining the order of things and keeping the same wealth dstribution).
The terms left and right are based upon France's 'parlement' just after the revolution, where one party sat on the right side and believed in keeping he monarchy (just about) with limited power, and the other wanting full out revolution sat to the left.

Ok. First, it comes from England's House of Lords where the conservatives (Tories), for centuries, would be sitting on the left side of the chamber which is divided by an aisle right down the middle and the liberals would sit on the right.
