Because someone somewhere decided that red should be called red... this is the same somebody that decided blue would be called blue, and yellow be called yellow.
I always thought it would be a great social experiment to train your kids from birth that the color Yellow is actually called Green... Or, The color Red is really called Yellow... get the point? I would just train my kids that all the colors names were different from what they really were... of course the would see the color the same as you and I, but they would have the opposite names for those colors...
Truthfully, I probably wouldn't do that... my kids would be really messed up for a long time, and would probably hate me later in life.

We see the color red because when light hits a red object it absorbs all of the colors, but reflects back the red light which is what we then see - red

Why can not be red, why would only be red in text, or in your head. When you think about the meaning of the word why you can't, or its weird to associate it with the color red.
