Call the vet or speak with another horse enthusiast in your area. If your cousin cant afford the treatment, some vets will take the animal off your hands before they put them down.

If your vet is sure that it is calcium built up on the joint, then there may not be much you can do. We have an 18 year old mare that has a huge calcium knot on her front knee from being kicked as a yearling. She gets around fine, but is not rideable, and as she gets older, the cold seems to bother her a bit. I would take this horse to a leg specialist (like a racetrack vet) to confirm this. Or if you do not have a lot of funds and your cousin wants to get rid of the horse, consider donating it to a vet school. The students there learn a lot about different illness from horses like this, and the horses are given excellent care. And if they do have to put a horse down, then you know it was done in a kind humane manner.

Calcium build up on a horses joint is caused by bad water, too much calcium (the wrong kind) is very deadly to a horse. There is not much you can do that would be cheap. You could have them give the horse an opperation but it would be very expensive. Unfortunately, time is done for this poor horse. It is in a lot of pain and it needs to be helped.

I would take it to a lameness specialist before you put it down if it is a horse you would really like to keep, there are so many things that can cause swollen joints including bacteria. sometimes there is a simple solution if you just have someone more knowledgable look into it further.

swollen joint is a common symptom for lots of syndome.
The best way is to get the joint ultrasound so that it can be determined if it is a fracture, abcess or tendon tear ot something else.
It also has to be borne in mind that vet bills are not cheap, if
the horse is in pain and costs are a constraint, it would be more humane to consider euthanasia

is the horse limping? dont put the horse down, check with a vet first, i do know that youre not supposed to sweat down the swelling, just let it be. swelling is a natural way of healing.

put some arnica gel on and just let it rest and take it for short walks holding its headcollar and just wait before having it put down good luck
