How long would the training take?

Pretty hard. I've got a couple of friends doing pilot training at the moment. It's mainly about experience - all pilot licenses are based on flying hours, and you need 1500 hours for a commercial licence. The plus side is you can get a basic license with just 20 hours or so, and then work from there.
The biggest problem is being able to afford to hire a plane to log the practice time in.

Check out wikipedia for all the details:

Mostly they hire former military pilots because of the massive amount of real time flight hours.
Civilian training schools don't take too long but you will always be behind the military pilots in the hiring line.
Join the military (need college first to be a pilot / officer)

To become a Captian you would need at least 5,000 hours of flight time
