Flash was originally developed by Macromedia as a way of serving rich content and interactivity that is cross platform complient. Flash Player lets you view Flash via your Web browser. Adobe purchased Macromedia a few years ago.

It is a software (very small in size, easily downloadable) that allows you to play flash animations. However, unlike other players like the windows media player, it is invisible to the user. That means when you download and install it, you wont' see anything like a play button or any interface at all. But the flash animations (which are on webpages) will run only if you have the player.

as you can tell it's a player, but it plays specific media files called flash files with .swf extension
there are from animated movies for advertisment, news bar to a complete website that are made by flash and if yiou want to see them in your browser, you should have flash player

Its a software that allows one to view flash images on the website.. I'd rather call it a plugin or extension rather than a software
