My intrepretation of Matchbox 20's "Mad Season" is that of a guy who´s just tryin to figure out who he is and is going through a phase in his life which he kinda calls mad season sorta like a insider´s joke with himself, cuz he needs a way to cope with all the strange feelings hes havin and not being able to understand them as they happen..cuz like he cant figure out why he feels so lost or stupid or ugly some of the time, and then like his normal more or less confident self again at other times, and he finds it funny that no one even notices all the changes he´s going through cuz he feels like he´s fluctuating between 2 different personalites...and that should be noticable usually. lol.

And he´s singing this song to a girl...“So why you gotta stand there, Looking like the answer now? It seems to me you'd come around, I need you now”...he´s basically saying, she helps him find himself, just by being with him, you know...she´s like the answer he´s been searchin for cuz when she´s around, he just feels "okay"...if that makes any sense. hehe..its a pretty sweet song, and in my opinion, really sincere cuz its like right from the heart. But anyway, this is just my intrepretation. Hope it helps, though. =)

I remember reading an interview with Rob Thomas at around the time of release, that it was written about the sudden fame that the band found after their first album. They were huge overnight, and they found themselves on tour, never coming home, for years.

But that's probably the inspiration for the song. They probably didn't make it too obvious so that people can relate to it more easily.
