I visit Second Life every day. It is a virtual place, sort of an imaginary country that you explore. It isn't like the usual game, such as Wow. Ther are very few built-in quests, adventures, treasures, monsters, and so on.
instead, you (and me, and the other 500,000 people) make our own world. Just like real life. You can build buildings, or cities, or boats, or a golf course, or Loth Lorien. Whatever you can imagine. You can make clothes, and objects, cars, swords, etc.
There are entire areas devoted to imaginary worlds such as Medieval Japan, Anceint Rome, LOTR, outer space, Gor, and lots of others.
In Second Life, players (better called residents or citizens) can interact, talk, chat, meet, dance, explore, fall in love, have sex (well, imaginary sex, any way).
If you can make a product, or provide a service, you can go into business in Second Life and make actual money.
My advice is to treat Second Life as a place. Sign up for a free account, go there, and imagine you just got off the boat in a strange country where you don't speak the language, and you are flat broke.
Go from there.

I have been an avid participant in Second Life for just over a month now. It is like The Sims on steroids. In a nutshell, it is a simulation of our real world. Just as you can find anything in the world, virtually anything is possible in SL.
There is a real, breathing economy in SL, along with money making opportunities, career choices, relationships, clubs, you name it.
There is also a built in system to exchange game money ($Lindens) for real US dollars, so you will find people in SL who make actual careers from the game. Others don't bother to ear money but simply purchase it with real money. The choices are endless.
The primary ways of making money are: building, scripting, or services. You can build items in SL (clothes, buildings, useful items, games, etc.) through a powerful (if not cumbersome) interface. You can script objects via a very powerful scripting engine. And, as you can imagine, there is a limitless supply of sevices you can provide, from DJing dance clubs, to escorting sevices (just like in the real world, sex sells big in SL!)
I hope this will give you a nice overview... if you'd like more specific information, let me know!
Best of luck!
