Official name for a ticket given by the police to an offender usually for a misdemeanor. You have been cited for allegedly committing a crime. It is not an admission of guilt. Only a record that the officer has given you of an offense. Once cited, you must either pay a fine or appear in court. Sometimes a citation is issued as a warning to the offender and just logged in police records.
