I have a friend at my college. A while ago, I asked her out, but that didn't go over to well. More recently, she stated that she wanted to remain my friend, but has not acted like it. When I speak with her, she often seems remote or unfriendly, sometimes online she will be friendly with me... it seems like it is off and on, and it is very frustrating. An example is that when I was talking to her one day, I offered to lend her something, the next, it was refused when I brought it; I don't know what to do, and I am honestly very frustrated here.

I forgot to add this, that after she rebuffed me, we agreed on just friendship, so regardless of what I -want-, I am only pursuing friendship -- I am well aware that I am not in a good position to pursue more than that

Particularly, when I asked her "do you actually want to be friends or was that just you trying to be nice", she said that she did honestly want to be friends...

I think that you know the answer yourself, my friend! Move on. She is clearly giving you the message that she isn't comfortable with any relationship with you. Make it easy, and start looking for that special someone who is dying to spend time with you! No one is worth being 'frustrated' over, and in the end, there will still be be nothing, so just smile when you see her, but 'move on'. good luck.

It sounds to me as if your friend doesn't want a romantic relationship with you but doesn't know how to tell you. It is "safe" for her to talk to you online because there isn't any pressure but in person, she is once again confronted with the "what do I do if he asks me out again" quandary.

Be upfront with her and tell her you suspect she doesn't want romance but that you'd like friendship.
