Basically the Giants traded Shawn Merriman and Philip Rivers for Eli Manning. Would any one make that trade today?
Merriman is one of the best if not the best LB in football.
Manning is not one of the best QBs in football.

The Giants better hope that Eli wins a Super Bowl before Philip Rivers does.
If you are a Giant fan who would you rather have Lavar Arrington or Merriman?

As a general manager you don't want to gamble your first round picks. Eli Manning was guaranteed for greatness. They knew that he wasn't going to be a Pro Bowler instantly, but with the help of Kurt Warner at the time, they knew Eli would be good. He took the Giants to the playoffs by his second year, and is currently leading the division now. His pass % went up, and hasn't thrown a TD in only one game he started.

Phillip Rivers and Ben Roethlisberger, the two QB's selected after Eli, were unsure bets. Roethlisberger only became great after Maddux became injured. Rivers is surrounded by a great corps of backs and receivers, so it's easy for him to be good.

Between Lavar and Merriman, I would stick with LaVar. Merriman is the better player, but the Giants don't need a sack artist, they need someone to play the Cover 2.

I agree with you on this one. I am a big fan of Philip Rivers from when he played for my favorite college team, NC State. Lavar Arrington is good, but he gets hurt every time you turn around. The only memorable thing he has done was end Troy Aikman's career (which I still haven't forgiven him for, I am a huge Cowboys fan.) You are right, Merriman is good and Eli is NOT one of the best QBs in football. I hope Philip Rivers beats him to a Superbowl win. Have a good day.

Hindsight being 20-20, the trade for Eli was a blunder for the Giants. Rivers is proving himself to be the better QB and Merriman is exactly what the Bolts D needed. As a Chargers fan I say thank you NY.

You have to take Merriman's ( steroid using self) over arrington, but Eli is going to be very good. Let's remember as great as Peyton is he has yet to win the big one. And honestly if the giants get a decent running back in the future after tiki retires and maybe one more receiver, and tighten up their line a little Eli maybe around the playoffs more than the chargers look at divisions.

I would take Rivers over Manning even without Merriman in the deal. Rivers is more mobile and has a quicker release. Besides, Rivers is playing better than Eli this year and he's just starting out. Rivers has real potential to be great, Manning just has a name, he's no Peyton.

I have always felt that Eli was overrated. I'm a devout SEC fan and watched Eli play on several occasions. All the hype kept saying he was further along then Peyton and was the better of the two. What a crock! Duh, the reason he was further along than Peyton was because he had Peyton helping him. Also, Peyton reads defenses better and has a stronger arm. He also throws a tighter spiral.
To answer your question would I take Merriman and Rivers for Eli? In a heartbeat! Of course, hindsight is 20-20 vision. Therefore, it is difficult to pass to harsh of judgment on draft day.

Of course they made a mistake, thanks to the stupid men in tha Manning family, being snobs, they thought San diego wasn't good enough for Eli. When they played last year, Sand diego beat their asses, and they will do it again. Merriman is the best in his position and Rivers is very promising, currently he is playing better than Manning, so, as a Chargers fan, I have to say Thank You for thinking SD was not good, because now we are not stuck with you Eli, and we have 2 good players.

No, I am a Dallas fan and I think Eli was not a mistake. They just have to come up with better schemes for him. If you noticed he even got more passing yards than Romo last night and that is saying something, especially against the 4th rated defence. The Dallas defence played a little better and that's it. If I was a Chicago fan and I had Rex Grossman as quarterback right now ,then yes i would be worried. Peace,

Manning is overratted, as one person mentioned his name is his stardom. Eli is not a leader and seems too reserved for th eqb leadership role, Rivers is just getting statrted, what a crock of poop poor eli did not want to play for San diego. Hey listen bub when u get a chance to play in the nfl i dont think you should be choosy,on where you want to play your not your brother or your father. Why didnt eli want to play for SAn diego? great weather great mexican honeys? NY overcrowded egostisical people

from a Charger fan, whether Eli wanted to play here or not, we got the better deal. Now if only we had picked Polamalu instead of bust Sammie Davis.....think of how good our defense would be (we'd have more interceptions, and less yards given up by the secondary, and even better run D.........)
