i joined a job recently and i find it difficult to met people with a laughing face .
kinda makes me feels awkward . sometimes it happens that i am not impressed by a person face and i find it difficul to hide that . i try to put a laught it all makes the situation weird .
i met my GM who had this hard look and i tried to laugh but well he mistook me for being a con man or something ... i went to sign in a paper he did that ... and i tried to laugh ..it was all artificial . the gm felt i am fooling him or something and he rechecked the documents . i just cudnt look at him after that , i said thanks and subsided .
the question is do you laugh when you meet people ? how do u cultivate the habit of showing respect and also at the same time make it feel natural ?
shud u have eye contact when you meet people likeGM etc...

please advise me as I am a socially backwards , i wanna develop my corporate personality :-)
cheers

I wouldn't "laugh" when I meet people, or came in contact with them from day to day. Doing that makes people feel like your trying to fool them, becuase they have no idea why your laughing, and peoples subconcious tells them that there the butt of the joke. When meeting someone, simply look them square in the eyes, smile as sincere as possible, and give them a firm handshake (unless its a women, then be gentle). You can also throw in a "hello" or "Very nice to meet you (again)". Looking them in the eyes, is very important too. This is a sign of respect for them and yourself. Don't stare them down, just make a brief 3-5 sec eye contact. If they break contact sooner, then you can too. If they don't, then after 3-5 secs break it yourself. Don't try to "out stare" them either, especially if their in a higher position. If you want a sincere smile while meeting them, just think of something that makes you smile. Think of something happy, and it'll come. You can also on your free time try smiling on your leisure. This will stretch your face muscles, allowing natural smiles to come easier. And don't worry what you look like when you smile, that will cause you to make it unrealistic. Good Luck!

mentally unstable person laugh at the slightest excuse or reasons, or the lack of, man you've a long road ahead of you!! how do they hired you in the first place?? you smile, nod your head, & greet your gm, collegues, the cleaners, the tea lady, etc, etc, so that you won't appear to be sucking up to your gm big time.

Just grin and bear it! That's what I was taught! And know if you are laughing AT them then they are 1-3 steps behind! Have confidence and know that you are the one that will be laughing last!!!

Try smiling instead.
