i own a repair shop, and its has an idle enrichment valve on it that may be gone bad, this will cause them to do this there are also a number of other things that can cause it also,it may need new spark plugs in it they may not be burning all the fuel that is being put in the engine, basically it may need a tune up,after 10 months of driving ,now the engine is probably broken in good and should be re-tuned so that it will run and perform at its best what you need to do is take it in to a good mechanic and have him look at it and run it and see if it needs tuned ,im sure after 10 months of driving it needs a few things re-set on it,good luck with it,i hope this help,s.

It's still running rich. The check engine light should be on though and the code should indicate a rich mixture.
The 02 sensor tells the computer if a rich or lean condition exists.
If the light isn't coming on, the sensor may be bad or not sending the right values to the computer.
Also an open injector will cause a rich condition. But the 02 sensor should pick that up and set a code.
Or maybe you are smelling an oder of sulpher from the converter. If that's the case, it's running lean.
Have a scan ran on it to discover what the problem accually is.
Hope this helps.

I had a rover 6 series and had constant problems from day bought to day it died it cost me a fortune but i had a similar problem with it to yours and no one could tell me what was wrong had it at several garages and it was a mystery, in the end it turned out the fuel tank was split in the middle where the join was, i had been smoking in the car and was lucky to be alive! It could be that or possibly the fuel pipe. The day I picked it up from garage gettin that fixed it burst its brake pipes while driving out the garage! After that car died I bought another one as I loved the rover 6 series so much, and that one was exactly the same, I will NEVER buy another rover, buy an Audi with the money you will save from NOT fixing your rover, so much more reliable, Ive had mine for a year and its not been in the garage once!

The petrol air mixture is too rich and unburnt petrol is getting though the engine into the exhaust. This would give a poor fuel consumption. Have it tuned properly and change the plugs.

because of the fact of incomplete combustion, you need to inspect your exhaust equipment and confirm that the engine can breath good. As incomplete combustion may bring about fireplace popping out of the exhaust, because of the fact the petrol is going up the exhaust equipment, once you advance up no longer hassle-free and gets ignited by skill of the air on the top of the tail pipes

the engine may still be running rich, take the car to a garage and ask them to check the air fuel mix, they may find that its running rich and can adjust this for you then your mpg should be better

Try altering the engine idle tickover... see how that works... there should be a little screw by your engine you can change the fuel/air percentages with...
thats what i'd try at any rate

Perhaps it is still running rich. Maybe you need to adjust the mixture instead of replacing anything else.
