Sorry, but you have to be highly educated to drive a nuclear sub through the ocean, along the ocean floor and into enemy territory without detection. Also, I hardly think that a Captain and his crew are lacking in education when they steer an aircraft carrier into a narrow channel or through rough seas with millions of your taxpayer dollars on board.
It takes engineers of the most brilliant kind to manage these sophisticated weapon's systems with the precision they require. Not to mention our Air Force and their ability to fly these jets in and out of enemy territory without so much as a scratch on their bum.
What about our special forces in all branches of service? They not only have to be physically fit at all times, but are called to the level of PhD when it comes to understanding the psychology of our enemies. -----to be continued:

... And furthermore, CARL:
How about our military Doctors who are providing amazing health care to our men and women and their families in our military? They didn’t become Doctors just by signing on a dotted line and standing in a room, saying an oath with their right hand in the air. It’s called, EDUCATION!
You are the uneducated idiot in all of this if you fail to see the above.
And I know you are thinking about the average Joe who might otherwise have ended up a drug dealer on the streets had he not enlisted: Well, here is what I have to say about that;

If those in our society who are struggling to gain an education choose to sacrifice their lives (laying them on the line) for the likes of you so that they can have a chance at some sort of decent life otherwise... then I WOULD SAY THAT TAKES QUITE A LOT OF COURAGE AND EVEN WISDOM to know that joining the military might very well be your only option.
THERE ARE NO SMALL ROLES IN SOCIETY! Even the idiot like you is necessary in order to lend credence to the brilliance displayed in our United States Armed Forces!

I never liked Kerry to begin with. He acted like he was above the common person. My husband is a recent enlistee in the National Guard along with my brother. I have three cousins and an uncle in the Armed Forces and both my grandfathers retired from the military. Every single one of these men have a degree of some sort and my uncle is a lawyer! Come on now! Kerry's words may have been intended for Bush but if that's the case, he should apologize for his wording. He owes our troops an apology for his misstatement, not his stance. He won't apologize because he stands by his position and dislike of president Bush. He thinks if he apologizes , he's admitting he's wrong. He'd be admitting a misconstrued statement.

I have no idea what Kerry even said because I am busy with my life and getting my PhD. However, I am sure it would not sway my vote simply because I look to the issues not the idiots and vote for who I think will best represent me. I have never voted a straight ticket in my life! Kerry's intent is not important because, in American society intent doesn't matter, what matters is what was said. We, as a society, have a problem seeing below the words and beyond the meaning. If we didn't, negative campaigning would not work and therefor we would not be subject to hours of stupid commercials.
Military enlistees do tend to have less education than their peers. The Officers you mention (Captian of a ship, etc) are exceptions to the rule as they have college degrees (it is required for a commission). The difference is not really in the intelligence of the weapons system technician, it is in the ability of the officer corps and trainers (experienced personnel) to train those who get the job. That is the true difference inthe US Military, the quality of the training and the trainers. The materials for many of the MOS's are written at a 5th to 7th grade level so everyone does understand it. Some areas require higher ASVAB scores to get into (for instance, Navy Nuclear Systems Speicalists). It is true that they are well educated for the jobs they do, that does not mean their overall education is high. It is also true that the military will not take someone without a high school diploma or GED (at least last I looked) unless so ordered by the court.
The question is a great question, your flames as addendums are uncalled for and really unwarrented. Your passion is admirable and I admire anyone willing to put their life on the line for my freedom, problem is, I really have yet to see why Iraq was, prior to the war, a threat to MY freedom. Now it is, we made it that way.......terrorists love the republican's because they are awesome recruiting tools and have really riled up the anti-american sentiment in the middle east and among muslim extremeists...

I had made my mind up long before Kerry made his comments. But I think he may have actually misspoke. I haven't seen much that would say to me that Kerry has any respect for soldiers, just having been one isn't enough. He came home and trashed his fellow soldiers and has trashed our current soldiers for a long time now. Kerry is far far left and I don't know anyone personally who is. Most people I know are moderate either Democrat or Republican. Kerry should say sorry and be done with it.

No, I always thought he was an idiot.
He meant it as a nasty jab at the President, which is wrong, so he gets no sympathy for speaking out against anything.
He basically said, if you're lazy and stupid, you will be shipped off to war. Whether he meant to or not was irrelevant. He should have kept his big mouth shut in the first place.

If I was American I'd vote for a war hero and not a draft dodger. That would be enough to sway my vote.

I think he said exactly what he means, and I think it is terrible. Especially being a veteran himself, he needs to respect our troops more than he does.
