I think it's to do with how your skin reacts to sunlight - if your skin turns reddish or flushes in sunlight you have a warm tone; if it just tans, you have a cool tone. I know a skin consultant who said warm skin tone ppl should avoid shades of red etc. while cool tone ppl should wear them.

if your skin burns easily in sunlight then you have a cool skin tone and if your skin tends to get a nice little tan in sun light then you have warm skin tone .
