If we could get able-bodied people off of the welfare roles, we'd have plenty of money to help people with real handicaps, but the program has created generation after generation of slackers.
The answer isn't to give away more, but to give away less. No one who is capable of doing something should get a free ride. The only thing the government should ever do is SUPPLEMENT incomes, not give money away.

Assuming you are in the US, they can do more. The problem is that Congress is Republican dominated. Their vote ALWAYS overrides the vote (by majority rule). Take some of the recent changes that Bush has done in the past six years of office:
1. Cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, veterans benefits (even though we are at war), student loan cuts. These cuts would help the majority of Americans. However, these cuts were put in place by the Republicans, who historically sell votes for special interest groups, etc. The Democrats do this as well, but on a lesser level. If you were to go back to when these programs were implemented, you would probably see that the Democrats were the ones who started them, but sadly, the Republicans get them cut (eventually), when they get back into office.
The new Medicare Prescription Plan is a good example. It did not help the majority of people. To obtain their plan, you must sign up (yes, you will pay a premium for this service). Then you must go thru the complicated process of choosing the right program-there are about 40 of them).
Once you choose the right program (you hope) it will really benefit you, & not just be more money out of your pocket. Then you will (probably) need a supplemental insurance to go with your new Medicare Prescription Plan that will pick up what the Govt plan won't. You see many insurance companies "willing to sign you up"-for a fee of course. So who's making money? The Govt & the insurance companies. Not the Medicare recipients. Another one of those "take from the poor & give to the rich plans" the Republicans are so good at.
Look for Bush to restart his Social Security revamping after the election. Who will benefit? Finance companies & banks who will handle your retirement funds (for a fee), assuming you are able to put something back. See what we have to look forward to? If the Republicans get & maintain power? Bummer the the poor, great for the rich. Truly, the American way.

While some are truly disabled, to many are saying they are and could easily go to work. My brother-in-law is a great example of this! Was in the military but spent most of the time in jail. And was not given dishonorable only because his mom fought for him with the Governor. Now he disgracefully has Vet plates and gets $900 a month because he smoked so much he can not breath.

My son is disabled and he gets enough help. He gets a monthly check, free medical and dental, he has a place in a terrific home with 4 other guys and a housedad, and a job in a sheltered workshop so he can earn some of his own money. Now special ed, THAT was a nightmare.

Aiding the disabled is not part of the Republican agenda. Republicans feel that if you become disabled you are not worthy anymore and deserve what you get.

I agree that the U.S. government needs to start focusing on its people a bit better. That's why it is important to vote wisely.
Good Luck and Take Care
