Obviously you have a fuel leak somewhere!
You can open the hood, start engine and let it idle, and look for "gas" (liquid) on fuel lines), - also check to make sure that the vapor return lines no the "carbon" fuel reclaiming cannister)- are all connected, -(and don't have big holes in them), - between the intake system of the engine and the cannister! If the leak is big enough you may be able to follow your nose to the problem!
If you see nothing there, don't forget to check underneath the car also, -- if you see a "dripping leak" the spot on the ground will tell you where to look! Also check underneath after it has sat for a while, if leak lower than the tank, it will continue to drip without engine running!
Yes the gas cap could be a problem -depending on the air currents, - (and how tight the body is!). but don't forgret the vent lines, and return lines from the front either)

Do not light anything around the car ! even when you turn it on it creates a spark so do not do it! Look for the filter on the fuel line the hoses could be rotten, broken or the fittings on the filter could be bad. my filter is close to the vents and when it was changed it needed to air out a bit. if your not experienced please take it to a dealer by towing it!!!!!!!!!!!! This is a dangerous situation!
