US is more like the big kid in the play yard bullying all the other kids. Now small kids, like North Korea, are starting to bring weapons to the play yard just in case because the US kid gave the Iraq kid a fat lip.

The United States is a Super Power.

as a european, i can speak from the other side.

i used to admire the american judgement, used to think that america had the "right idea" about most of their policies.

But then, they voted in George Bush. Now the first time i can forgive... but the second time...NO WAY!

Ever since he has been president i have lost all respect for the US. Ever since 9/11, the glamour of the big strong USA has been tainted, by a president that doesnt know what the hell he is talking about, or what he is doing.

Have you ever seen 2DTV? its a show over in the UK, and the take off of George W is laughably accurate.

It used to be a super power, then became a great power, and now its just a stroppy bully in the playground as has already been said. Al gore would have been a far better president. and you all know it. Isnt it funny that these situations almost exactly mirror the same things that happened during his fathers presidency? you should have learnt then.

A great power but not a super power. What is sad is that there are not things that this generation can be really proud of except for the things past generations have done. Growing up I was very proud of my country but recently I feel like we are behind the rest of the world in many things. From technology to education, to research areas, health care. We don't even have the same rights our parents had. Being an American doesn't feel the same as it did 15, 20, or 30 years ago.

The US achieved superpower status after WWII. So, based upon definition, it is a super power. Does it abuse this power? Yes, I think it does. Because there is currently only one super power, there is no one to apply the necessary "checks and balances" to keep the US in "it's place". Therefore, the US has become a bully. (I love the earlier analogy and have often used one similar because it really does fit.)

Who is/are the World's next super powers? Well, the two main contenders are the EU and China. And, the sooner we have a second super power, the better off we will be. Just as competition amongst companies keep them from over-inflating costs to the consumer, the existence of a second super power will curb the USA's unhindered trend of doing what it wants, when it wants, to whom it wants.

Firstly... the super power thing.... obviously they are... it isn't up to any of us to decide on that... we simply have to look at the size of their military...

Are they a great power though? Probably yes... because who else on this planet could umdertake the military excursions that they regularly commit to....? I would suggest very few! But... and it's a big BUT... with greatness there must also be a degree of responsibility shown... and I would argue that they have not always acted with great responsibility... nor restraint, come to that.

I like and respect Americans, but I am ofter surpised by the xenophobia and ignorrance that they exhibit...

Furthermore I am disturbed by the way in which they arrogantly ignore the will of the rest of the world...They are happy to rely upon the United Nations and EU, but are dismayed when they can't get their own way... It is amusing to see their posturing.. sometimes their government resembles a petulant child rather than a great power...

Well im an Englishman and having lived in the states, im afraid im not jealous in the slightest, but now to the question, undoubtedly it is a super power..........politically, but socially it is very stunted in it's care of its own population, i wonder how many people die in the United states because they cannot afford the correct medical care or medicines, and coming out of chicago near the baseball stadium, seeing the shacks and burnt out buildings people were living in, ssays a lot for the social conditions of your country, yes we have homeles people here in the UK, but not poverty to the extent that you have there, People dont go hungry and dont depend on welfare food stamps, and we certainly dont give more in overseas aid, when we have just had a national disaster of our own ( new orleans) so to recap, politically a super power, socially a poverty stricken mess.

I be live we are a super power but we have alot to learn from such countries as Canada with socialised medicine, one of the things that's help make our county that super power is our humanitarian efforts to other countries, our democracy, yes its true some things are not so good here, as far as homeless people go they have a choice and they choose not to make anything good for themselves, this is the land of opportunity and if they choose to stay low to pole then that is there decision. jobs are abundant but when you choose to do drugs drink and not live a good life than things happen

Super power by the fact that the US thinks that they can boss everyone around and think they are better than everyone else. And invade random countries.

not a good thing at all.
