i hve read articles that america wants to deploy thier missle shield in poland and romania,is'n't that against the profiliation missle treaty sighned by both the russians and americans 10 year ago.russia has said if those missles are deployed they will launch counter measures thus starting another cold war, america has allready broken the profiliation missle treaty years back when it decided to go ahead with their missle defence system. so it looks like the u.s.a don't want peace in the world, they want to rule it!! ohh and who ever says those missles in poland are for defensive purposes agains.t iranian or north korean attack is brain washed ,why are they deployed so far up north in poland, its would make sense to deploy them in southern european countries.

If you look at the makeup of this administration it is easy to see the answer to your question. President Bush has appointed Sec. of State Rice, Sec. of Defense Rumsfeld and his VP is Dick Cheney. All are veterans of the politics of the cold war. Rice and Rumsfeld have a large portion of their governmental experience in cold war politics. Sadly, that mentality seems to be all they understand.
It is obvious from some of the answers you are receiving that many do not know what the Cold War was. The Cold War has nothing to do with the War in Iraq or the War on Terrorism.

Short answer: we need a villain.
Longer answer: our society is very competitive.
Consider sports: if you live in, say Oklahoma, and you go to a Univ. of Texas vs. Univ. of Okla. football game (usually held at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas), there is a damn good chance some yahoo will key your car because it has Okla. tags on it.
Even within a town, two rival high schools can get very aggressive in the "us versus them" mentality.
So what we have here is a hunger, an insatiable desire to find an enemy in which to rally the people (or troops) and go out and conquer.
After the collapse of communism, there was a vacuum of competition.
Nature abhors a vacuum.
A "bad guy" was needed.
So our government created a villain.
Now we can all be happy in knowing that "we" are the good guys, the people God has anointed to fight the good fight.
And "they" are the bad guys, and God does not like them and wants them dead.
Very twisted mentality, if you ask me.

I can't accept the premise of the question.
How can we 'start' a war of any sort since currently, all it takes to end any of our present conflicts is for the other side to simply STOP. Conversely, if we stop. we'll be overrun.
Last time I looked, we are defending ourselves. Is it really THAT hard to love your own country???

Poland is one of the allies of the US. We take care of our allies, we don't abandon them.
I contend that the Cold War never actually went away. It just laid dormant for a number of years and the key players have changed.

I'm missing the logic here. Are you actually saying that defending out citizens and our allies is a bad thing?
