First off, China is not a Communist country anymore. China is a capitalist coutnry with an authoritarian government.
China is worried about North Korea because they share a border with them. If North Korea were to collapse, China doesn't want millions of North Korean refuges flooding into China looking for a place to stay.
China's leverage over North Korea is that most of North Korea's oil comes from China. China says it doesn't use it to leverage North Korea, but the North Koreans (generally, not always though) listen when China asks them to do something. Like rejoin 6 party nuclear negotiations.

They are both Communist Nations.
China provides most of North Korea's electrical power and other resources as well, which makes North Korea very dependent to China.

The late Mao Zedong was a substantial benefactor of Kim Jong-Il's father (the late Kim Il-song).

Also, China is keen to prevent N. Korea from becoming unstable, lest it could have a major refugee problem on its border.
