This kind of car is basically elecric cars. Elecric power is from a battery which gets energised by sunlight. This is called Solar cells or solar battery.

Depending on the reserve power available, the car can be run during night also.

Sunlight is an excellent energy source and the future of using solar power is very exciting. The Sun's energy can be used to heat and cool buildings, generate electricity, operate communication and navigation systems and even power solar cars, like the ones in the General Motors Solar Car Sunrayce featured in the Newton's Apple segment!

Solar-powered cars all get their fuel from the same place - the Sun. The cars use hundreds of photovoltaic cells to convert sunlight into electricity. Each cell produces about one-half volt of electricity.

When the Sunrayce teams design their electrical systems they have to allow for variations in sunlight. The Sun's energy powers the car's motor and charges a battery for use when the Sun is hidden by a cloud. If a car is designed to put all of its energy toward driving and keeps nothing in reserve, it will stop completely in cloudy weather. If too much energy is diverted to the battery, the engine runs too slowly to keep up in the race.

Not directly because, by definition, solar energy is derived from the Sun.

However, solar energy captured during the day could be stored in batteries and used to run a car at night.

Solar power could also be used to split water into Hydrogen and Oxygen and the Hydrogen then used as a petrol (gas) substitute. This would mean that the ultimate source of energy was the Sun but would release vehicles from the requirement to be in direct contact with sunlight in order to operate. Burning Hydrogen would also be pollution-free as the "exhaust" would be water.

By using the solar energy to charge up a bank of batteries during the hours of light and then running off the batteries at night.

Solar cars have large banks of battteries. They actually run on electricity from those batteries anyway. You should know the capacity of your car, to plan to come home after dark. On cloudy days you do get some solar energy.
