we have conductors, insulators and semiconductors

semiconductors lie between conductors and insulators i.e. they can conduct electricity differently than conductors. they have special properties which are not found in conductors.

for deep study take some ref. books.

A semiconductor is a solid whose electrical conductivity can be controlled over a wide range, either permanently or dynamically. Semiconductors are tremendously important technologically and economically. Semiconductors are essential materials in all modern electrical devices, from computers to cellular phones to digital audio players. Silicon is the most commercially important semiconductor, though dozens of others are important as well.

Transistors are usually made of semiconducting materials such that another circuit can control whether current flows though a defined region of semiconductor or not. Conductors can be used to connected these transistors together into circuits. The most common material used to make transistor is Silicon. Billions of transistors can be printed on to a silicon wafer, after manufacturing the wafer is cut into silicon chips. Advances in manufacturing means that the cost per transistor is a few percentage of a cent. By having very complex designs making use of all these transistors turn the chips into very useful electronics components such as microprocessors or memories, which go into making up computers, cellphones, DVD's etc.

Semiconductors are needed to make devices, like diodes and transistors, that can control the flow of electricity, much like a switch would but electrically controlled. Such devices cannot be made with conductors only.

Conductors transmit energy from point a to point b while semiconductors are used to create devices which do work.

semi conductors are required sometimes like in solar cell we can't use conductors here contuctors will lose all the stored solar energy.here we have to use silicon semiconductors
