My e-mail account can not be read on line. I have to print each message to a PDF file to read.

Hmm, interesting situation.

I'm going to assume you're an Internet Explorer user, and I'm going to strongly suggest you try Firefox. (The reasons why are after the rest of my suggestions)

Go through the basics - get programs like:
AVG - anti-virus (Google the name)
Ad-aware - Anti-spyware (Google the name)
Spybot - Anti-spyware (Google the name)
These find and remove nasties like spyware and viruses.

Zonealarm - Firewall (Google the name)

This will keep people from accessing your computer from the internet, and will also stop programs from accessing the internet - you have to let them through before they can. This is a good thing.

Do yourself a huge, huge favour and get Firefox...

Free, fast, a small 5mb download, Firefox blocks pop-ups and sites from secretly installing programs on your computer. It will copy over your settings from other browsers (cookies, settings, bookmarks). Firefox is powerful too, it's more up-to-date than even IE7 according to the web standards (w3.org).

The main reason I like Firefox is because it's customizable.

Why is customizability important?

Imagine being able to do 2 small things and never seeing a banner ad, flash ad or an iframe ad again? (Remember, pop-ups are already gone)
Imagine being able to pause your computer's music player when the phone rings without having to switch to it?

Firefox puts the power back in your hands!

I haven't done anything. Generally the problem is with the user (that would be you) in that you've clicked on some web page or e-mail attachment which has now infected your system.

You might try ad-aware (for spy program deinfestation) and/or one of the anti-virus programs and make sure your system is clean.
