I'll echo the summer comment---
Its too hot to play outside unless you're in a pool or at the lake
Summers are brutally hot but you get used to it and everything is air conditioned. Car interiors get really not in the summer
Sept to about April is great.
You may miss the change of seasons-- not much change in Phoenix. But it does change in the high country.
If you live on the west side of Phoenix, you can be in Flag in about 1:45. 70's to about 20's in less than 2 hours. And when you're sick of the snow in Flagstaff you can drive back down and be in reasonable temps.
Huge hispanic population, relatively small black population, plenty of caucasians. Other ethnic groups are not as big but plenty of enthic food etc. all over town-- Point being, other than hispanic areas, there aren't many "ethnic" parts of town (e.g. little italy, china town, etc.) as there are in other places. Still, diversity of food and other things is better than years past.
Mass transit is so-so. Not much use here. Mostly busses but light rail is being built.
Traffic can be bad in many parts of town-- surface streets and freeways. Try to move relatively close to where you work or you'll spend lots of time on the freeway.
Prices are reasonable for most things. Housing has gone up quite a bit over the past few years but is going down a bit lately. Still probably cheaper than NYC area (if that's where you are).
Not much manufacturing. Mostly tech trades, service sector, financial services.
Prop taxes relatively low compared to NY and other places
Income taxes not too bad either
Sales taxes in PHX area are around 8% or so depending on city.
Be choosy on school districts-- some are way better than others
Pretty decent place to live but certain takes getting used to-- it is very different than many other parts of the country.

I love the surrounding area of Pheonix! I lived in Chandler, AZ for a year before I had to come home due to family issues. The jobs are great down there, the schools are wonderful & it is just a beautiful place to be.
Tempe, AZ is also a good spot! Any place near Phoenix is a good idea. I am trying to convince my husband to move back down there with me!

I moved out here in 2007 from Jersey, I live in Tempe. Arizona is much nicer than anywhere on the East Coast, the laws are better, the freedom is real, and the state itself is beautiful. Casa Grande is about 30 minutes South of Phoenix, its a little out there but its a great change from the NY area. The local people are really nice and it has a true South West feel to it.. I grew Up along the Shore in NJ, so I miss the Ocean, but other than that, you can never get me to go back to NJ. If you like to be able to buy lots of land, and live away from the city, then Casa Grande is great, but if you want to have that feeling your not way out in the boondocks, then consider Chandler or Mesa, they are on the outskirts of Phoenix.

My family moved here last year from Michigan and it was worth it! The summers do get hot, but there is no crappy humidity like in Michigan and New York. And we moved to Goodyear and it is a homey, up and coming community. Very family oriented. Estrella Mountain Ranch offers a community center and water park for it's residence only. Very fun and worth the change. You get used to the heat pretty quick. There are no real change in the seasons though, so if you enjoy snow and fall foliage, you will want to plan all your vacations back home during the winter months! Good luck with your decision!

if your moving from new york and im assuming the real estate is pretty high up there, take your money and move into North Phoenix, not places like Chandler and Tempe and Gilbert, dont get me wrong they are nice, but if you live in North Phoenix/Glendale/Scottsdale, you have everything at your beckon call, plus, there is less crime and there are some good schools. i love Norh Phoenix. you got to get in the right neighborhoods though or you could be regretting your move. u might miss the seasons, ive lived here my whole life and im going off to college and i cant wait to see 4 seasons and snow. the heat is an easy adjustment as long as you drink your water, me for example though, im a camel, i can go a week without water and be perfectly fine, thats how adjusted i am, traffic is getting insane, but if you live in a place where traffic is bad, u will probably be fine.

I've been back and forth numerous times. Last time it just was'nt happening the way I planned. I regret coming back here. I should have stuck it out. The good outweighs the bad. July, August, and September do suck! If you can withstand the "dry" heat then you will be fine. I'll probably end up back there again. Im trying Austin first. We will see what the future holds.

You don't say where you live in New York -- if upstate, you may miss the season changes, but I can't think of anything else. Arizona is a starkly beautiful state with much to discover and enjoy. Additionally, the people there are friendlier than most anywhere in the northeast. Move and enjoy!

Do it, AZ is great. I was born and raised in the NY?NJ area and I am so glad Imoved here. Wide open spaces, beautiful weather, the scenery, especially the sunsets, breathtaking. The most amazing electrical storms ever...and the best part....no driving in the snow!!!!! Casa Grande is a great area....

Get used to the idea of the kids being inside for all of the summer. People block off the street in some neighborhoods in Mesa at 10pm to allow their kids a chance to get out and play. I moved there from southern Ca. and could only take three summers. Here's just a few things to look forward to:
Burning your arm on the car door when you go to pay at the drive-thru.
Change heating up in your pocket, hot enough to burn your leg.
Not being able to touch the steering wheel of your car if you forget to put up the sun shade.
Forget that dry heat crap. 116 is flaming HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!
