It's the AA, the Automobile Association. Like many other things, including an elected parliament and two world wars, the US comes along late and then thinks they are the only game in town.

The AAA is the cheap knockoff version of the AA.

The AA will come and make small fixes to get your car going, if that doesn't work they will get you home from anywhere in Europe (if you have the right service).

The AAA will jump start you, give you a little fuel or tow you a short distance. Pathetic.

And no, I don't know what is happening with the AA.

BTW it's AAA (American Automobile Association)

Nothing is happening to them. They are still around. I think the big thing is they are not as big/useful as they were before due to all the others in the motorist assist biz now.

All car companies offer some sort of roadside assistance
OnStar, etc.
and
Their other business was TripTiks (maps), but Mapquest/Googlearth and GPS in-car navigation has reduced that as well.
I think their towing network has also dwindled as they don't pay as well or fast enough for the tow companies. (this is from a tow driver friend I know)
so they are still around, just not a big as before.
