I have a whole heap of tasks to do at work, that are dull and uninteresting. Many of them do not have specific timescales but they need to get done however. I simply can't find the motivation to do them. Any suggestions???

Listen to some music while you are doing them. It will lift your spirits. It works for me everytime!

Stop going an yahoo answers! Maybe I should follow my own advice.. am in the same boat. Damn those statistics.

Seriously, break then down into bite size chunks, then have a game with yourself to see how quickly you can get each task done - and reward yourself after its done by, say, going on y!answers, or flirting with the person you like in work (now where has she gone?) Give yourself 30mins to do a task that you know takes 20 mins, do it as fast as possible, then play for a bit, then start the next task etc etc. It can work if you are very childish like me.

Damn, where is she? She's not responding to messenger...

Take a few of your tasks aside and tell yourself you will definitely try to finish that little pile. When you finish that pile, do it again. I find when I can look at a task and it looks messy and too much to handle, I separate it. I take a small amount and tell myself I WILL finish this. Eventually, before I know it, I'm done! It's all about fooling the brain into the thinking the task isn't as big as it appears. Good luck and have a stress free day!

sounds like you work at the same place as me - i am surrounded by paper - some with deadlines & some without deadlines & yet i sit here at my computer on yahoo & emailing my friends most of the day - i have zero motivation & the boss noticed and got on my case, so now everyday i force myself to tackle at least one or two of those tasks - i promise myself in the morning that by the end of the day i will complete at least 2 tasks - i am also looking for another job, because obviously this is not the job for me, although the pay is good, but i have learned that money is not everything - get busy completing at least 2 tasks today & i will also!

ok if you have time start by putting each task into a category start with the most difficult when it's done give yourself a reward like a cup of tea or a coke! Then come back refreshed get started on the rest telling yourself you will get a new reward this evening maybe a movie or a nice trip to your favourite place this weekend what ever gets you through, I get myself through bad days like this and it really works, little rewards mean you are working towards the reward not noticing the amount of boring tasks it takes to do to get them!

I have the same problem. Its a matter of will power. Try to do at least one of the mundane items each day until completion. After completion of each item, reward yourself with something such as half an hour on Anwers. Or a glass of your favourite tipple... or chocolate. Anyway, you get the idea. Now I have convinced you... who's going to get me motivated?

Make a list of all the things with a different 'reward' for completion of each one

then, randomly pick one so you have to do it and can look forward to the random prize too!

A 'Magnum' at 9.05 am can be very rewarding and motivating!!

Make a list of 10 fun things you would like to do at work that won't get you fired. Then alternate, one task, one fun thing, and so on.

No, I'm afraid not - though I would suggest that you look at yourself as being a 'square peg in a round hole,' and look for ways to deal with this.

But, I do know just what you mean, finding the same problem for myself at times (many times) too.

Sash.

set yourself a reasonable goal, like at least do 3 papers in the next hour. that way, you'll at least have something done.
another way of doing it, is to reward yourself with something that you've always wanted to get, like if i finished this pile of work then i'll be able to have my nails done. then just spoil yourself.
hope this motivated you a little.

Nah... it'll wait.

My plan for the rest of the day,

1.Go and get a coffee.
2. Go to the toilet.
3. Walk down to reception and chat to receptionist.
repeat until 5pm.
