I mean (for those who don't know) I asked those questions about conversation and friendships during trips because... I've come to realise that I've made no friends during my travels (and i do travel a lot). I can't even remember a conversation I had on a train or plane (I always listen to music read or play on my lap and never pay attention to the others).
So, which is the thing that frightens us so much? What do you think?

Well, maybe you're just detached from it all and into sights and yourself rather than being social and stuff. Although I do not travel, I am a bit like you. I always have my nose buried in a book, have my headphones on, and if I had a laptop, I'd be on that!
I am just not that social... Talking to others- strangers-- doesn't mean much to me unless if the stranger is very intriguing. For me, there's just so many unanswered questions and posibilites about who the person is... I'm trying to overcome it though!

The question is why do you travel? Is it to experience other places? If so then the people are a big part of that process. Half the fun is meeting new people and getting to know where they're from and how they live. Humans have a natural instinct to want to connect to others. These must be pretty boring trip for you.

Sounds like you need to put away your electronic gizmos and tune up your personal skills. I love talking to new people while I travel and have the sort of personality that people open up to. I usually end up hearing their deep dark secrets and helping councel them with their problems.

I think its a matter of preserving our own personal space, and to a certain extent preserving the space of others too.
Perhaps shyness or inhibition (fear of being thought of as pushy) also stops us.
