I think it dates back to when people were poor and getting together the ingredients for a cake was no easy matter. One scrimped and saved and stored away carefully. What's more, the Christmas cake is made so as to last and to savour at one's leisure. I imagine that it would have been a really big treat in times of rationing, when people would have had to save their food coupons to be able to manage this big luxury. Sugar, fat, dried fruit -- ingredients which one had to do without most of the time because of rationing.

I've never heard of that tradition - but then again i believe everyone's family has their own traditions they pass on - for instance in my family we open one present on Christmas eve and the rest on Christmas - and we eat lasagna - lol so i guess it would all depend on the family and what you were raised on celebrating.
