Love (romantic love)
Death (loss of ones loved ones)
Both themes are still in any episode of any soap.

One major theme is that people will do anything for love. Another theme is sins of your father. If you look at Romeo and Juliet they suffered due to their families fued with one another. Had their fathers reconciled the feud, then Romeo and Juilet may have actually had a different outcome.

The first thing to do is to determine what the timeless themes in this play are. Then you can compare them with real life and discuss how the story speaks to all of us.
What do you think of the battling of the two families? What do you think of R&J's innocent love? What do their deaths represent? How do you think that the tragedy of their deaths affected the members of the feuding families? hopefully this will get you started.h

Though I wrote a very good essay on the universal themes of Romeo and Juliet my junior year of highschool - I'm not going to do your homework for you. But, I will give you something to start thinking about to hopefully draw your own answers from. Start thinking about what caused Romeo and Juliet to have to go to such extreme lengths to be with one another, and the irony about the faked death of Juliet - and keep in mind that they were "star-crossed" lovers...

To me, two of the universal themes were love and hate.
For love, it can and does conquer all boundaries. Those who should be bitter enemies can actually fall in love, committing totally to one another. Even though their families were feuding, Romeo and Juliet were able to love one another.
For hate, tragedy abounds and hate results in nothing positive. Despite their love for one another, the families would never accept a union between Romeo and Juliet. As a consequence, they choose to commit suicide rather than live apart from one another.
