Steve Nash is an excellent player, which is why he got the last two MVP awards. He has a very thorough understanding of his job and performs at a very high level, possibly the highest worldwide for the PG position now that Jason Kidd is in decline. He hasn't won a NBA championship or an Olympic medal yet, but he probably shouldn't be judjed in those terms before the end of his career. For the time being he is great for transforming an average team into a championship contender and making all his teammates play better (even Diaw!).
However, he is not a great athlete. Even though he has played soccer and a few other sports at lower level, it is not his athletic ability that make him great. It's his understanding of the game he chose to be good at.

He is a great player. His vision, unselfishness, and most importantly his understanding of basketball make him great. His passion for the game makes him exciting and allows him to out play more athletic guards.

He is not a great athlete. He can not jump very high, is a poor defender, he isn't particularly strong, and he isn't even the fastest guy.

I'd much rather have a great player than a great athlete on my team. BTW great question!

He's both. By the way that you're saying it, he has brought home the gold in 2 MVP awards, and he does that by being one of the best at what he does, making him a great athlete.
It's really too hard to differentiate between the 2, they go hand in hand way too much.
