Hi, I have a question about a sound my car is making. Its a 2000 Chevy Cavalier 2.2 liter engine with an automatic transmission, 50,000 miles and ABS brakes. There is a noise coming somewhere from the left front wheel, sort of like a cross between a squeaking and a brushing sound.

I can hear it when I'm driving, but not with the windows close, and it makes the sound on every tire rotation, so it pulses at a rate proportional to how fast I'm going. It is constant, speed or turning makes no difference. I checked the tire and it seems to be okay, so I guess the tire can be ruled out. No blockage in or anything caught in the wheel well either. What does this sound like to you?

The noise was gone for a while after I did tire rotation 2 months ago, and now it comes back. Could be time to get new brake pads?

Sounds like there may be something caught between the rotor and the brake pad . If this is not the case then it's probably time to change the brake pads .

you have three things may cause this noise:
1-brake shoes became thin so need change
2-the clipses which holding the shoes is not fitting well, make close check after removing the tire out.
3-protection tin as rounf plate to squeezed from one of ends andscraching any movable part of tire

It sounds like you need new brake pads. There is a metal warning indicator that rubs on the rotor when the pads need replacing.

You might want to have your car taken in and have your CV Joints (also known as half-shafts) inspected. If your car is front wheel drive, the CV is notorious for going out and making all sorts of noises. Regards, Z
