There are probably a lot of spiders that would fit
your description. More information is needed, such
as where (geographically) the spider was seen, in
what kind of habitat and at what time of year. The
various other answers mostly mention the garden
or writing spider (Argiope), but it might qualify as
a large spider, depending on what you consider
large. Another eastern U.S. spider that sometimes
has a bright yellow mark and is smaller is another
of the orb spiders, Verrucosa, which has a triangular abdomen and gets about a half inch long
in body length.

The yellow marking on back sounds like an orb spider.

However, we would really need more information (especially a pic) to ID the critter. But check out that link, it has a few pics of various orb spiders and one of them is your basic garden spider.
